The Clapeyron effect in succinonitrile: applications to crystal growth

چکیده

This paper describes experiments that measure the Clapeyron effect, i.e., the change in melting temperature with static pressure in succinonitrile (SCN), a common model material used in crystal growth experiments. The Clapeyron results also yield information about the density change upon solidification — a parameter that is difficult to measure accurately and directly in SCN due to void formation in the solid. Furthermore, making a pressure change in an experimental environment presents researchers with a way to change more rapidly and uniformly the supercooling of a melt than by using conventional heating and cooling techniques. Transient Effects in Dendritic Solidification

Dendritic solidification is a common mode of solidification. It is also an important model problem in non-equilibrium physics and pattern formation physics. Current theories couple the transfer of latent heat with selection mechanisms at the interface. Measurements of succinonitrile (SCN) dendrites in microgravity show reasonable agreement between heat transfer predictions and experiment. Howev...

Observations of Several Characteristic Transient times in Pressure Moderated Thermal Dendrites

Succinonitrile dendrites, growing under steady-state conditions, are subjected to a rapid change in pressure. This leads to a rapid change in thermal driving force from the corresponding change in equilibrium melting temperature due to the Clapeyron effect, and a change in the far-field temperature due to adiabatic temperature changes in the bulk liquid and solid. This allows us to observe a de...

Pressure-mediated effects on thermal dendrites

We subjected succinonitrile dendrites growing under steady-state conditions to a rapid change in thermal driving force through a step-change in pressure. This change in pressure caused a corresponding change in the equilibrium melting temperature due to the Clapeyron effect, and a shift in the temperature field due to an adiabatic temperature change in both the solid and its melt. The new therm...

Velocity and radius transients during pressure mediated dendritic growth of succinonitrile

This study was part of a larger effort called the transient dendritic solidification experiment (TDSE), which uses the well known Clapeyron effect to study transient effects in dendritic solidification. The transient behaviour was studied between well defined steady states using pressure mediated changes since it is almost impossible to study the transient behaviour during growth of a dendrite ...

Reversing radial segregation and suppressing morphological instability during vertical Bridgman crystal growth by rotation

During vertical Bridgman growth of an alloy crystal, local accumulation of solute at the interface center due to buoyancy often causes formation of a deep depression or pit and accelerates morphological instability. Through visualization of the freezing interface during directional solidification of succinonitrile containing ethanol on a rotating table, it was shown that rotation about the ampo...
